News from the Australian Wool Industry
Wool buyers should be forewarned of a sharp rise in wool prices that will begin hitting the shops sometime before the end of 2011. Below is a condensed version of an article published in the The.Age.com.au, written by Darren Gray, 29 January 2011. The article is entitled “Farmers Hopeful Wool Is Back As Market Prices Soar”.Wool prices have jumped to a 23-year high this month, prompting some wool growers to declare that ''wool is back'' after years in the doldrums. The surge made modern history in the wool industry. It was the highest price recorded for the index since wool was fully exposed to market forces with the abolition of the wool floor price scheme in 1991. It was also the highest price in US dollar terms since the Australian dollar was floated in 1983. Lionel Plunkett, a market analyst with the Australian Wool Exchange, said the price surge was due to a ''classic supply and demand situation''.
The once-famous Australian wool industry - crucial to the nation's development - has been battered in recent years by a plummeting national flock numbers and the move by many growers away from wool to sheep meat production and crops. Sheep flocks have dropped from 180 million back to 70 million now, predominantly because it's been so difficult to make a good living.
Price Reductions
We are happy to announce a reduction in price for our Silk Throwsters Waste. The original, shinier, more silk-like version is now back in stock. The Silk Textured Waste which we stocked for the past year is no longer available. Thankfully, we have been able to hold our prices steady for our other silk fibres and silk fabrics. - Quantity Discounts
